A tough dayâ¦
Miah didnât want to leave her home eitherâ¦
When she got up and saw the outside, her arms extended loose towards the floor. She had prayed for rain, but didnât happen. She walked toward the kitchen, put the kettle on the fire and waited for the water to boil. Slowly, as if she didnât have strength, she filled the biggest cup she could find in the cabinet and walked to the dining table. She sat down, held the cup with both hands and silently looked at the sunrise.
«Dear God, if you can hear me, make all the possible so Mathew doesnât come. I donât want anything bad to happen to him, but I settle for something small that makes him stay in bedâ¦Â», she thought.
She drank the coffee, left the cup on the table, got up and went back to the bedroom. The pictures of both of them in bed, enjoying that moment, appeared in her mind again. She took a deep breath to assume the big mistake, walked to the closet and picked a turquoise shirt and some jeans. She did her hair in a ponytail and left her house.
«Why does it seem to me that everybody is making more noise today? », she asked herself at the same time she put on her sunglasses and walked towards Mrs. Duffyâs house. «Iâm sure that old Monty served us poison instead of beerâ¦Â».
She went up the stairs to the entrance of the hostel and knocked the door. Even the slightest knocking bounced in her head as ringing bells.
âGood morning, Miss⦠âgreeted Kathyâ. I hope the night ended much better than it started.
âYes, I can assure that. Although, I beg you not to raise your voice. My ears seemed to be more sensible than the rest of the days and I can hear how your nose puffs.
âI donât puff, I breathe. And whatâs happening to you is normal in a hangover â she scolded her with a maternal toneâ. Have you had breakfast? âMiah moved her head forward, but quickly stopped and put both her hands to the sides of itâ. Come in, Virginia is in the kitchen finishing putting the food sheâs cooked in the baskets.
âBut⦠does that squalid knows how to prepare anything besides boiled vegetables? âshe asked as she was walking inâ. You know how people are here, if they see anything green on their plates, they give it to the horses.
âDonât be mean, Miah. The girl has done what she could. If sure more than one will eat her food without spitting it. âshe walked with her to the kitchen where Virginia welcomed her with a big smile.
âI wonât spit it in front of her âshe said before replying to her new friendâs smile.
âGood morning, Miah. Could you get home or did you get lost in the way?
âAnd youâre telling me not to be mean with her?
âShe learns easily âsmiled Kathyâ. Iâll leave you two alone for a moment, Iâll go change my clothes. Save the nails for the field, Iâm sure youâll need them.
